Sylla’s response to industry shifts and helping libraries weigh their options, making the most of open for teaching & learning

Earlier this week, Clarivate announced a shift in strategy and that it will “phase out one-time perpetual purchases of digital collections, print and digital books for libraries.”. Full press release here.

In a move that has widespread implications for the wider sector, libraries and their workflows, as highlighted well here. As the wider sector faces financial challenges, we are not convinced that moving to an access-only future and ever-growing content deals is the solution.

Here’s how we can help libraries today:

  • Sylla can help paint a picture of how open content matches to your reading list and support you in weighing your options in a move towards open

  • We run a free of charge at scale reading list or course analysis to understand your options to find, assess and use alternative open content and streamline local adoption

  • For any library interested in better understanding how they can make the most of open educational resources (OER) and open access (OA) for their teaching and learning needs feel free to get in touch (info@sylla.io)

Making the most of open

At Sylla, we believe in a future where quality open content - in the form of scholarly works, textbooks, videos and other formats will be widely available. Where libraries and educators can easily find, assess and adopt these as they see fit for their local needs around teaching & learning. There are many actors already working towards such a future, and while there are challenges to work on still there is a lot we can already do today. By removing some of the barriers libraries and educators typically face when it comes to really adopting and using OA & OER we can drive further successes.

Building a better future

With new technologies becoming available at an unprecedented rate, we can choose to work towards a future where open education at scale and personalisation can go hand-in-hand. One where the library and educators play a central role and we can better support them and their needs around teaching & learning.

Get in touch if you would like to understand how OA & OER match to your teaching and learning needs today via info@sylla.io. Or reach out for an online chat or meet us at any of these upcoming events.
